When Nicole Whitcomb's car runs off a Colorado mountain road during a blinding snowstorm, she is saved from death by a handsome, fascinating, and enigmatic stranger.
Snowbound with him for days in his beautiful home high in the Rockies, she finds herself powerfully attracted to him. But there are things about him that mystify her, filling her with apprehension.
Who is Michael Tyler? Why does he live alone in such a secluded spot and guard his private life so carefully? What secret - or secrets - is he hiding?
Nicole has secrets of her own and a past she is running from - but Michael understands her better than anyone she has ever known. Soon, she is falling as deeply in love with him as he is with her - a profoundly meaningful experience that is destined to change their lives forever.
As the sexual tension between them builds, however, the clues mount up. When Nicole learns her host's terrifying secret, there is nowhere for her to run but into the blizzard raging outside, and Michael may be the only one who can save her life.

This book is the most touching, emotional, and bittersweet stories that I've read in a while. I started this in the morning and finished it the same day. I could not put it down. Ms. James did an excellent job of keeping the readers interest in a story where there are only two characters interacting with one another the entire time. The story and events are told from both Michael and Nicole's POV. Which I thought was great. Because these two people are stuck together for 4 days through no choice or fault of their own, they must interact. What I found enchanting and romantic was the way they related and how they got to know one another. Through there discussions, their reactions, and how they read one another, it was quite believable that these 2 could actually fall in love with each other in such a brief time. And the fact that they had so much in common with one another also made this believable. I've seen quite a few reviews about how some did not like the ending, or they wish it could have gone another way. I found the ending true to real life and circumstance, and I felt it was a perfect ending to their story. This book had me in tears quite a few times. Especially when Nicole and Michael shared their demons from their past. I do not want to give anything away for those who have not read this book. But it is Haunting, Romantic, Sexy, Emotional, and Bittersweet. I highly recommend this read.

Nocturne (Audible Audio Edition) Syrie James Holly Fielding Audible Studios Books Reviews
This book has all the elements of a"Gothic"novel with a twist!Being an avid reader this was one book that I couldn't put down!A beautiful love story that builds upon many layers!I'm hoping that the author gives us a sequel as I am sure that there will be more to Michael's and Nichole's story!
The book was wonderful and I read it in a few days. wonderful story and well written but...
come on! im a 38 year old woman who is so tired of authors making their audiences wait to see if there will be another or have to wait to see if there will be another one or if their will be then when? its infuriating and it almost makes you feel like you are being messed with? This is the second Syrie James novel i read and i love her writing but geez, im so tired of reading great novels then boom...nothing. do they not realize that unless reminds me about the next one i will not remember to keep checking about the next one in the series. i gave it all stars bc it was that good but the only reason why i did not take a star away for being kept on a string was bc i want to send me more like it.
so in a nutshell, wonderful, but you will be kept hanging at the end.
After loving best selling author Syrie James' The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen, as well as her Dracula, My Love The Secret Journals of Mina Harker, my next obvious step was to read her latest offering, Nocturne. Our story begins with Nicole Whitcomb driving to the Denver airport from a Rocky Mountain wedding and ski mini-break, when a blinding snowstorm whips up, and her car hits black ice, spinning her out of control and over an embankment. She blacks out, only to wake in a rustic, mountain lodge having been rescued by its owner, a handsome, recluse named Michael. The blizzard outside prevents her from continuing on her journey. As the hours turn into days, an uneasy companionship ensues, as Nicole becomes ever curious of her mysterious host. Why does he choose to dine alone? Why is the kitchen so under stocked? Why is he shockingly rude but yet still thoughtful?
Curious attraction fuels this odd companionship through their common interest in books when she discovers his first edition collections of classic literature represented by Daniel Defoe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Bram Stoker, Mark Twain... When she asks if she can borrow one, he answers,
"'Whatever you like, Miss Whitcomb.' She heard something different in his voice--a quieter, mellower tone that he'd yet exhibited - and she turned to look at him. He was leaning up against his desk, his arms crossed over his chest, his long legs stretched out before him. His guard was down, and he was studying her with an expression that resembled something like tentative delight. It was the first time he'd looked at her that way - as if she might prove to be an interesting human being after all and not just an inconvenience. It wasn't the most flattering look in the world, and yet the newfound warmth in his blue eyes made her heart skitter. `This isn't Pride and Prejudice. You can call me Nicole.'" Page 49.
As the sexual tension increases and her imagination runs rampant in this mountain seclusion, she readily makes his excuses, only to discover that her wildest dreams, or nightmares, are now her reality. Will I ruin it for you if I tell you that yes, Michael is a vampire? Like the iconic vampires of Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, and even Stephenie Meyer, Michael has his impossible strengths and weaknesses. When Nicole realizes what he is, the shock and fear that she has fallen for a vampire sets her on a dangerous escape.
But it's his unlikely humanity, as well as his "love for her" that allowed him "to hold his carnal instincts in check" that endeared me most. As the sun comes out and the roads have cleared, Nicole and Michael must find a way to co-exist if their forbidden love is to survive.
Tauntingly compelling, the ending left me spent. Let's just say however, thankfully Syrie James included an Author's Note (and helpful Author's Questions and Answers) that gave me hope (or at least wishful thinking) that she might revisit Nicole and Michael's love story in the future. If not, let me be the first to petition such a work! The haunting Nocturne is the perfect escape book for romance readers with some pretty steamy love scenes sure to warm you to your toes these cold, winter months. Enjoy! (as posted at Austen Prose)
Nocture was a dark but still sweet book. It's plot was unique in that there are only two characters and it spans over four days, after Michael "rescues" Nicole from her car accident during a blizzard. Then they become snowed in. This is a unique challenge and James does it well. I actually cared for the characters, and in fact, was able to learn so much more about them.
I really enjoyed the little details that made up Michael's character. He is a complex character with a history and hobbies and interests. Nicole is a young accomplished woman and I was able to connect with her character. She had a great voice, and believable reactions. For instance, she starts becoming very suspicious of Michael's behaviors and his medical condition (hemophiliac)and Nicole reacts in fear (although she is enamored by him) which I'd like to think that the majority of the population would also react in such ways if ever stuck in that situation. But in the majority of vampire novels that I have read, there is never that most basic, common reaction.
Now, as for the ending ... it is bittersweet. I appreciate what James did and why she did it. It is unique and has stayed with me.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a paranormal romance with a vampire and a bit of a twist. But if you are looking for the fairy tale ending, this is not the book for you.
